Police: Man killed teen girlfriend before trying to take his own life

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police confirm the fatal shooting of a teenage girl and a man who had a self-inflicted gunshot wound just one mile away are connected.

In a press conference Monday, Police Chief Gerald Smith said a man shot and killed his girlfriend, before attempting to take his own life.

"This was domestic violence related," Smith said

Police were called to the 500 block of Labrook Drive just after 1:35 p.m.

When officers arrived, they located a 16-year-old girl inside a residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The teen, whose name has not been released due to her age, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several hours earlier, officer responded to a report of a parked car at a stoplight at the intersection of Carnation Street and Midlothian Turnpike.

Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive man inside the vehicle suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

That man was transported the hospital where he remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
