CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A man shot by Chesterfield Police in a Sunfield Drive home was charged with numerous crimes relating to the incident that prompted the police response.
Officers were called to the 11300 block of Sunfield Drive at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a domestic dispute that involved a man with a knife.
"Officers entered the house to begin investigating the incident," according to an email from Chesterfield Police. "Shortly after they arrived, the male, identified as Bruce W. Terry, 50, exited a bedroom and pointed what appeared to be a long gun at them. The officers fired at Terry, who then retreated back into the bedroom."
Maj. Michael Louth said the victim called 911 reporting that her husband had threatened her with a knife and was holding her against her will.
Police were able to remove her from home. She was unharmed.
"Officers used a technological resource to locate Terry in the house; Terry, who was found in a bedroom, attempted to disable it," the email continued. "Officers then introduced a second technological measure and were able to see that Terry was injured and somewhat lethargic."
SWAT officers entered the house, took a knife away from Terry, and placed him into custody, according to police.
Cell phone video showed nearly a dozen police officers and paramedics wheeling the suspect on a gurney to an awaiting ambulance.
Terry was taken to the hospital, where he remained Friday afternoon, according to police. Maj. Louth said the suspect was shot multiple times.
His condition was not released. Louth stated at last check the suspect went into surgery overnight Thursday.
He will be charged with:
- Domestic assault
- Abduction
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Brandishing a firearm (3x)
- Assault on law enforcement (3x)
Chesterfield Police provided CBS 6 with the calls to service report for the couple's home. Officers were called to the home 14 times within the last five years for several welfare checks, domestic and suspicious situations.
Police responded to the home six times in 2020.
Jordan and Jason Zema livestreamed on Facebook the robust police response in their neighborhood. They counted more than 30 police cruisers that swarmed their normally uneventful street.
"The officers got out and they were loading their guns with their shields and ran down the street," Jordan recalled. "My first thought was where were my kids?"
Jason Zema said he heard about eight gunshots and saw the victim rushed down the street while accompanied by police. It took two hours for police to take the suspect into custody.
"For awhile we could hear them on the bull horn telling him to come out with his hands up," they described.
