HANOVER COUNTY, Va. – Six people are homeless after firefighters doused a blaze that broke out at an apartment complex in Ashland Wednesday evening.

Bat. Chief Jason Williams with the Hanover Fire-EMS Department said crews were dispatched at 6 p.m.  to 309 Silver Smith Court at the Ashland Town Square apartments.

"A resident in apartment 309 notice smoke coming from the HVAC duct work and immediately evacuated the apartment," Williams said. "Once outside, he noticed there was a fire on the back side of the apartment building."

When crews arrived, they spotted smoke coming from the back of the apartment. By 6:45 p.m., Williams said firefighters had knocked out the fire and the blaze was marked under control.

A photo from the scene showed firefighters gathered outside the unit. That unit's siding appeared scorched.

Officials said everyone made it out safely and that no one was injured.

However, Williams said six people who live in the two apartments that suffered smoke damage have been displaced.

There has been no word yet on what sparked the blaze.

"Along with working smoke alarms, Hanover Fire-EMS reminds citizens to have a fire escape plan, and to get out and stay out if you have a fire," Williams said.
