RICHMOND, Va. -- A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect through Sunday morning due to extremely low temperatures and wind chill values.
Today's high temperature in Richmond today has been 21°. This will set an all-time record for the coldest high observed on January 31st. The previous record was 23°, set in 1948. Overnight temperatures will dip to between 10° and 15° in most locations, with single digits possible well north and west. Wind chill values will reach near or below zero around daybreak.
Light snow will depart the Hampton Roads area overnight and all of the attention will turn to the cold and blustery conditions. The wind will be sustained at 10-20 mph overnight across central Virginia and 15-25 mph during Sunday, with a few gusts over 30 mph. Higher gusts will occur near the coast.
Sunday will bring decreasing clouds and afternoon highs in the upper 20s to near 30.
Skies will be mostly sunny Monday and Tuesday, with highs getting above the freezing mark. This will allow residual snow and ice to melt. However, overnight lows will be in the teens and 20s. Anything that melts will refreeze after sunset. Highs will be in the mid to upper 30s Monday, and the low 40s on Tuesday.
A disturbance may bring some snow showers late Tuesday night into Wednesday, potentially mixing with a little bit of rain. There will be another chance for a few flurries on Friday, as colder air is reinforced over the region.
