SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. -- When Staff Sergeant Sytoi Warren realized he would be arriving home from Afghanistan a month earlier than expected, he knew he wanted to surprise his mom at work.

"She’s my best friend," SSG Warren said. "She's been there, supporting me with all my goals, especially so far through my military career."

So Warren, a 2010 graduate Sussex Central High School, showed up at his old school Friday, February 28, to surprise his mom Jwatonda Greene.

Greene works in the Special Education Department and coaches cheer leading, her son said.

"Friday marked seven years since my grandmother, her mom, had passed away," Warren said. "That day is typically rough for her, so I felt that surprise would bring her some joy and brighten her day."

The mother and son reunion was sweet, but short.

Warren had to return to Fort Bragg to prepare for his next assignment.
