State police investigate crash involving VDOT Safety Service Patrol vehicle on I-95

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. β€” The Virginia State Police is investigating after a crash on I-95 northbound in Chesterfield on Tuesday night.

The crash happened at mile marker 58, near Woods Edge Road, and involved a Safety Service Patrol (SSP) member contracted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

State police said the SSP vehicle was wrapping up from helping vehicles on the left shoulder and was pulling into the left lane when it was struck by another vehicle.

Photos from the scene taken by Chesterfield County Fire and EMS show a gray sedan with extensive damage and also reflect the damage to the SSP vehicle.

Crash involving SSP vehicle on I-95

The driver of the vehicle that hit the SSP vehicle suffered serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries and was taken to an area hospital.

The driver of the SSP vehicle was not injured.

State police continue to investigate.
