EMPORIA, Va. -- The Richmond Division of the FBI is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of an Emporia teenager.
K-Ron Surratt, 14, was shot and killed near his Emporia home in the early morning hours of September 5.
Police say residents along the 200 block of Briggs Street were awakened by the sound of multiple gunshots around 2:50 a.m.
Responding officers located K-Ron in a grassy area in a backyard, about two blocks from his Wadlow Street home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In an interview with CBS 6, K-Ron's parents Aaron Surratt Senior and Kaywa Young said that their son was an innocent bystander to a shootout.
The FBI says Emporia Police are aware of ongoing conflicts between rival gang sects in the city, which has resulted in retaliatory gunfire on numerous occasions.
"Investigators do not believe K-Ron was involved in gang activity, but are cognizant that he may have been a victim of random gunfire between rival gang members," FBI officials said in a release.
"Investigators have learned a black male, approximately 25 years old or younger, and black car may have been involved."
This case is now being investigated by the FBI’s Richmond Area Violent Enterprise (RAVE) Task Force in addition to the Emporia Police Department.
The RAVE Task Force is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction in the case.
