CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Heidi Cunningham, a 38-year-old Midlothian woman, was found strangled to death inside her Bristol Village apartment on Fern Meadow Loop on May 5, 2008. More than 18 years later, no arrests have been made and very little information has emerged about her killing.

Cunningham's family had been unable to reach her. She was in the midst of a divorce at the time and had struggled with her sobriety, so concerned relatives obtained an emergency custody order.

Once on scene, police found Heidi dead inside her apartment.

She had last been seen alive on Friday, May 2, 2008, when police responded to her address for a check the welfare call initiated by her estranged husband.

Heidi’s death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and her manner of death was found to be strangulation. Toxicology reports showed Heidi was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol at the time of her death.

Both of Cunningham's parents have since passed away, but police say the investigation will continue for the loved ones still living.

Around the time of her murder, there were random break-ins at the Bristol Village Apartments. Investigators have not ruled out whether Cunningham's killer may have been a burglar or someone close to her.
