RICHMOND, Va. -- Multiple fire crews responded to a fire at the Life Sciences building on VCU's Monroe Park Campus Wednesday morning.
The Trani Center for Life Sciences building is located at 1000 W Cary Street, across from the Cary Street Gym.
Corey Byers, the Public Information Officer for the VCU Police Department, said the Richmond Fire Department was called to the Life Sciences Building just before 10:45 a.m. for reports of a fire on the roof.
VCU sent out an alert saying the incident was a fire emergency and students and staff should avoid the area and evacuate nearby buildings.

Byers said the building was evacuated and it appears the fire was limited to the roof of the building.
No injuries have been reported, he added.
At 11:30 a.m., VCU sent out another alert saying the fire is under control, but people should continue to avoid area and expect traffic delays. Officials said the Life Sciences Building will remain closed, however all surrounding buildings may now reoccupy.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, according to Byers.
