RICHMOND, Va. -- Police have identified the man found dead near Richmond’s Mt. Calvary Cemetery as 37-year-old Almon L. Winston. Winston, who lived on Maplewood Avenue, was found Saturday morning next to a home at the corner of Greenville and Dakota avenues. He died from an apparent gunshot wound, police said.

"Detectives are actively working leads in the case," Richmond Police spokesman James Mercante wrote in an email.

A man out walking his dog Saturday morning discovered Winston's body.

"My dog happened to go over there, and I saw a guy laying on the ground," dog owner Larry said.

Anyone with information about Winston's death was asked to call Major Crimes Detective Michael Mocello at 804-646-6775 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
