Central Virginia under severe thunderstorm watch Tuesday

RICHMOND, Va. -- With the return of the heat and humidity, a few storms may pop up across central Virginia late this afternoon into the evening.  A trough developing ahead of an approaching front from the northwest will be the main instigator.

While we're not expecting a widespread or organized round of storms, any individual cells may produce heavy rain along with the threat for damaging winds and hail.  An isolated tornado can't completely be ruled out.  The map below indicates the risk areas, with Metro Richmond (and points north & west) under a "slight" risk, the 2nd of 5 categories from the Storm Prediction Center.  The eastern Northern Neck, as well as the Middle Peninsula are under a "marginal" risk.

Here's our in-house computer model projection of storm development by 4 P.M.  No widespread activity is expected, but a few scattered storms, particularly to the west of Richmond.

There's not much change by 7 P.M., but a shower or storm is possible in the metro area.

Note that the shower/storm threat will continue through the evening, although the severe risk should gradually diminish.
