RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond City Council President Charles Samuels will not be council president in 2015.

“I am withdrawing my name for consideration as Richmond City Council President. I have also spoken with Councilwoman [Michelle] Mosby on her expected nomination and installation as Council President in January and congratulated her,” Samuels wrote in a statement.

A specific reason behind his decision was not made clear in the statement. Samuels was elected council president in 2013.

Charles Samuels was unanimously elected as Richmond City Council president in January 2013.

“I appreciate all the support from my colleagues on Council and in the greater Richmond community,” he continued in his statement. “As we move forward, I am confident we will continue to provide the necessary checks and balances our form of government requires.”
