Police release name of man killed on Varina-Enon Bridge

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Police identified the man killed in a weekend crash on the Varina-Enon Bridge as 58-year-old Fred R. Bailey of  South Hill. Bailey was killed when his 2007 Jeep stopped in the center lane the Interstate 295 bridge Sunday afternoon.

“A jeep was stopped in the center lane of I-295, when a 2006 Freightliner tractor trailer approached, unable to avoid the stopped vehicle, struck it in the rear causing the jeep to ignite and catch fire,” Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said. “The driver of the 2006 Freightliner, William Lee Peterson, Jr., 52, of Rose Hill, North Carolina was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seatbelt. The truck was loaded with frozen turkeys. The driver of the jeep was pronounced dead at the scene.”

No charges were filed in association with this crash.
