RICHMOND, Va. -- A storm system will spread heavy rainfall and the potential for severe storms through Virginia on Thursday.

Heavy rain with embedded thunder will track past Interstate 81 during the overnight hours into early Thursday morning.

The activity will reach central Virginia before mid-morning.

Rain and storms will continue through eastern Virginia past noon.

Heavy rain will exit eastern Virginia by late afternoon, but scattered showers and thunder will remain possible into the evening.

A large portion of Virginia is under a flood watch Thursday. Rainfall amounts over an inch are expected. Totals in excess of two inches are possible.

The thunderstorms will have the potential to produce strong gusts. There is a marginal risk for severe weather for southeastern and eastern Virginia.
