RICHMOND, Va. -- The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)and Virginia State Police are prepared for the winter weather expected to hit the Commonwealth over the next few days.

A VDOT spokesperson said the state agency pre-treated roads in the northern part of the region but hasn't been able to get to all the roads due to rain.

Crews, they said, planned to come in Thursday night and work until and the roads were safe and passable.

With snow and ice expected, VDOT has tree crews on standby in the case of fallen trees.

"The ice on Saturday is a particular concern, just because it can be so hazardous and we just really advise folks to get things taken care of today and just kind of plan to stay off the roads when conditions are not favorable for traveling," VDOT spokesperson Sara Owens said. "Watch the local forecast because things can change."

Dominion Energy also encouraged people to report power outages online or by calling 866-366-4357.
