SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. -- A possible tornado damaged businesses, homes, and the Palm Tree Inn motel in Southampton County, according to the Courtland Volunteer Fire Department.

The possible tornado was reported at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

"Crews had a very difficult time of accessing some buildings due to roadways being blocked by live power lines, debris, and trees," the fire department posted on Facebook. "Other crews started tracking the path of the damage throughout the town of Courtland to assess for other potential emergencies. Crews quickly found out while assessing for damage that almost all roadways leading out of the town of Courtland were impassable due to extreme damage."

The Palm Tree Inn was in that path of destruction.

"Multiple crews were sent to the Palm Tree Inn, which sustained very heavy damage, to assess the damage and search for any potential victims," the fire department posted. "A few patients were evaluated for minor injuries and all were accounted for."
