RICHMOND, Va. -- Sawyer Perkins, an inspirational 10-year-old who battled a rare form of brain cancer, has died.
Sawyer died on New Year’s Eve, laying in her mom’s arms, and surrounded by her siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncle, according to her mother on the Prayersforsawyer Facebook page.
"She won her battle against cancer and is now dancing in the sky with her brother Dylan and all of her battle buddies who left before her. She went so peacefully and without any pain. Sawyer you left us heartbroken but we know you are now whole again," her mother, Jamie, posted.
Sawyer was diagnosed with Anaplastic ependymoma, a stage 3, aggressive cancer, at age 5.
CBS 6 has followed Sawyer’s journey as she continued to give back to pediatric patients as she fought her own battle with brain cancer.
Earlier this year, a local nonprofit granted Sawyer's wish by surprising her with a swimming pool for her 10th birthday.
