RICHMOND, Va. -- The Richmond Police named Capt. Kimberly Mooney as the police department's new LGBTQ+ liaison.

"We all deserve a world of trust, a world where we all belong," Mooney said. "The Richmond Police Department is committed to those goals."

Richmond Police said the mission of the position will be to facilitate conversations and strengthen relationships with the community. The liaison will also be given goals to promote awareness, training, and knowledge of inclusiveness within the department.

“Richmond is a diverse city and it’s important we’re proactive to ensure we hear from all voices within the community we serve,” Interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said.

Mooney has worked for Richmond Police for more than 18 years before being selected for the liaison position.

She also has a history of advocating for LGBTQ+ individuals through various community forums such as "Out to Protect Inc." a non-profit that develops education curricula for law enforcement about LGBTQ+ individuals and hate crimes.

Mooney has led awareness courses for all RPD officers and recruits. She has also worked collaboratively with members of Diversity Richmond.

Richmond Police officials said Mooney's first priority would be to grow the department's liaison group within the department and increase visibility to the community.

"We want the community to feel comfortable coming to members of the department," Mooney said. "Together we can achieve the vitality that comes with trust, safety, and an inclusive world for all of us.”
