RICHMOND, Va. — The Governor’s Mansion was scheduled to get decked out for fall Tuesday.
Members of the Virginia Pumpkin Growers Association were to deliver pumpkins to the Governor’s Mansion.
Farmer Dan Brann said he planned to deliver some of his pumpkins to be on display Tuesday.
He said he and his partner at Brann and King Farms in Riner, Virginia had been participating for 15 years.
This year, Brann said his grandson would be joining them.
“I had a good time with my nine-year-old grandson washing pumpkins and loading it up,” said Brann. “Got them loaded on the truck, ready to go. It’s the only time I ever wash pumpkins — you can’t take dirty pumpkins to the Governor’s Mansion!”
Brann likes to say the tradition started years ago out of ‘jealousy’ over the publicity the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers were getting when delivering Christmas trees to the Governor’s Mansion, so they started delivering pumpkins.
“Jealousy does some good things sometimes,” said Brann.
He and other members of the Virginia Pumpkin Growers Association were to deliver the pumpkins Tuesday afternoon around 2 p.m.
