Police: Suspect wanted for stealing vehicle with child in the back seat

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Police said they are searching for a suspect who stole a vehicle with a child in the back seat Tuesday morning.

Police said the suspect stole the vehicle from the 700 block of Hill Top Road at approximately 10:11 a.m.

Shortly after, officers recovered the abandoned vehicle nearby.

Police said the child exited the vehicle prior to the officers arriving on scene and was unharmed.

Detectives say the suspect reportedly stole a firearm from the vehicle. No suspect description has been released at this time.

Detectives are also reminding residents to take precautions to prevent crimes of opportunity such as motor vehicle theft or theft from motor vehicles:

· Lock car doors.
· Keep valuables out of sight.
· Never leave keys or the key fob inside the car. It makes the vehicle an easy target.
· Don’t leave a running vehicle unattended, even for a few minutes. It does not take long for someone to get in and drive away.
