JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. — A 93-year-old woman reported missing by her family was found dead in a lake near her Williamsburg home Sunday afternoon, according to officers.

James City County Police identified the woman as Hedwig Mainous, who lived in the 5000 block of Queen Bishop Lane.

Police said Mainous’s family reported her missing earlier Sunday and told investigators she was known to take walks around her neighborhood.

Officers canvassing the area found Mainous unresponsive in a nearby lake at approximately 2:58 p.m.

Patrol officers, the James City County Police Department’s Drone Team and Underwater Search and Recovery Team worked with James City County Fire and EMS to recover her body. Mainous was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the department’s Criminal Investigations Division believe Mainous’s death appears to be accidental. Police said no foul play is suspected at this time.

Her body will be examined by the medical examiner’s office to determine her cause of death.
