MATHEWS, Va. -- Virginia State Police have identified the man whose body was found inside a house which caught fire in Mathews over the weekend.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the fire occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the 200 block of Gayle Lane.
Police said 80-year-old Richard Henry Couch, of the 200 block of Gayle Lane, was found dead inside the house.
Officials could not confirm whether he was alive before the blaze started, and there has been no word so far on what caused the fire.
The Mathews County Sheriff's Office asked the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation/Arson Unit to investigate the blaze.
"This investigation remains open and ongoing," Anaya wrote Wednesday.
