SUSSEX COUNTY. Va. -- A guard and a K-9 were attacked Saturday evening at a Virginia prison just north of the North Carolina boarder, according to corrections officials.
A release from the Virginia Department of Corrections says that sergeant was stabbed a half a dozen times at the Sussex I State Prison around 6 p.m.
The sergeant was stabbed in the hand, arm and the side of his body. As he called for assistance in dealing with six inmates, a K-9 officer and dog responded. The dog was stabbed and needed emergency surgery. The dog is expected to survive.
A prison strike team was deployed to the facility. The incident was deemed under control around 11 p.m., approximately five hours later.
The sergeant, a 20-year member of the department, was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
The Department said that the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending for the assault on the office and the K-9.
