89-year-old woman killed, 2 others injured after vehicle crashes into building in Ashland

ASHLAND, Va. — An elderly woman was killed and two other people were hurt after a car crashed into a building in Ashland on Friday afternoon, according to authorities.

Officers were called to 809 Thompson Street at 2 p.m. for a report of a vehicle that crashed into a building, officials with Ashland Police said. That is the address of Hanover Manor assisted living and memory care facility.

When the vehicle ran into the building, police said three "bystanders" were injured.

Eighty-nine-year-old Polly Raines of Hanover County was taken to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries. However, officials said she later died of her injuries.

"Our sincere condolences and thoughts are with the family during this difficult time," officials with the police department said.

The two other victims had minor injuries, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle, 60-year-old Ramatou Zongo of Ruther Glen, was charged with reckless driving.

Police said their investigation into the crash remains open.
