HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A woman was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries after a driver struck her Friday morning in Henrico County.
The crash happened before sunrise along Staples Mill Road, near Bethlehem Road, not far from the Wawa gas station.
The driver who hit the woman remained at the scene of the crash.
"The preliminary investigation reveals a pedestrian was struck while crossing Staples Mill Road," a Henrico Police spokesperson said in a tweet. "The adult female has been transported to the hospital with critical injuries."
A Wawa employee tell CBS 6, the woman is a regular customer, who comes daily with her family, and lives just across the street.
Neighbor, April Stillwell, who also lives across the street from where the crash happened, said there's been several accidents in the area -- and it's become a major concern.
"It's really difficult to get out, and I do worry about my son," said Stillwell. "He goes to work at 5 in the morning and comes back, so I mean I do worry about it, absolutely."
"And with no sidewalks, you have pedestrians walking up and down Bethlehem you can't see. So there's not a lot of lighting, you've got no sidewalks, so people are walking, you know? On the side of the road. So it's scary. I mean what if you hit somebody?"
Two eastbound lanes of Staples Mill Road, along with the left turn lane westbound Staples Mill Road onto Bethlehem Road were impacted by the investigation.
This is a developing story.
