RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond Animal Care and Control is asking for the public's help to identify a dog that was left dead inside a crate at Byrd Park.

The shelter says they recovered the dog after being alerted early Sunday morning.

Officials say the dog was a 4-year-old female pit bull, grey and white in color, and about 50 pounds.

"We need your help on this one," RACC wrote on Facebook. "We are asking for help with any information you may have."

The shelter is asking anyone who saw something unusual near Byrd Park to give them a call.

"Very sad. Very senseless and we are hopeful someone saw something and will say something to help us find out what happened," RACC continued.

Anyone with information is asked to call 804-646-5573 or email Robert.leinberger@richmondgov.com.
