COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- One person is dead and a family member charged with murder in Colonial Heights.

Langdon M. Conklin, 24, of Dinwiddie, entered a family member's home along the 200 block of Woodbridge Road on Wednesday afternoon and stole firearms, according to police.

Conklin was arrested, charged with the gun thefts, and then released by the magistrate.

Hours later, police said he broke back into the family home.

"About 3:30 this morning we again got a call for the same residence on Woodbridge Road, but this time it was for a burglary in progress," Colonial Heights Police Major William Anspach said. "As units were responding, they located a suspicious vehicle that was leaving the area."

While some officers followed the vehicle, others proceeded to the home.

"As they were conducting their investigation of the burglary, [officers] located one deceased male inside the residence," Anspach said. "Our investigation into Mr. Conklin’s involvement in that is ongoing."

The victim was identified as 60-year-old Robert M. Conklin. The victim and suspect were father and son, according to people who know the family.

"This is an extremely safe neighborhood. This is not a situation where an unknown intruder broke into a home and committed an act of violence," Anspach said. "This is a domestic-related incident at this point there is no danger to the public."

Langdon Conklin was arrested again Thursday morning after a police pursuit.

"Virginia State Police and Chesterfield County Police joined the pursuit and with their assistance, the vehicle was disabled and stopped in the area of 288 and Hull Street Road," a Colonial Heights Police spokesperson wrote in an email. "Langdon M. Conklin was found to be the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle and was subsequently taken into custody without incident."

Langdon Conklin is charged with:

  • 1st-degree murder
  • Breaking and entering with a deadly weapon
  • Grand larceny

He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

This is a developing story.
