RICHMOND, Va. – A World War II veteran celebrating his 96th birthday received an incredible surprise outside his Richmond home Saturday.

Rayford Harris Sr. was surprised with a drive-by parade from family, friends and his Virginia State University students.

Harris, who has lived in his home since 1959, is the oldest of nine children and has five grandchildren.

The veteran who traveled to six out of the seven continents offered these life lessons.

“Be kind to people. Be willing to share and help," Harris said. "Be willing to not be biased about your opinions. Have faith in what you believe in.”

Harris said he gleaned that wisdom from his time serving in the Navy during World War II and his 41 years as an educator.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Harris. And thank you for your service.
