WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Florida-based grocer Publix Super Markets announced their expansion into southeastern Virginia with the purchase of a former Martin’s grocery in Williamsburg.

The store at 4660 Monticello Avenue will be remodeled and employ approximately 140 associates.

Publix currently operates eight stores within greater Richmond.

“Further expanding into southeastern Virginia aligns with Publix’s aggressive growth plan for the commonwealth of Virginia,” said Kim Reynolds, Publix media and community relations manager. “We are looking forward to providing even more residents with the high-quality service and products our customers have come to expect and have earned us recognition throughout the industry.”

A grand opening date is yet to be established and will depend on the scope of the remodel and completion of the store’s construction.

Publix is privately owned and operated by its 188,000 employees, with 2016 sales of $34 billion. Currently Publix has 1,162 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

The company has been named one of Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work for in America” for 20 consecutive years.
