Teenager shot; police searching for killer

PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police are investigating the overnight shooting death of 19-year-old William C. Elmore Jr.

Police responded to the area of High Pearl Street and St. Mark Street in Petersburg for a shooting at about 1:40 a.m. Monday.

"Police arrived to that area to find [Elmore] suffering multiple gunshot wounds," Petersburg Police Captain Brian Braswell said. "Elmore Jr. was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, hours later, at approximately 6 a.m."

Witnesses said they heard an argument or fighting prior to the gunshots. The search for evidence and witnesses remains on-going.

Police have not yet released information about a suspect in the shooting.
