RICHMOND, Va. — Several campers are back on dry land after being removed from the middle of the James River by firefighters.

Police say a group of people were staying on a small patch of land near Brown’s Island Saturday night when two of their friends vanished in a canoe.

They called 911 around 3:30 am Sunday morning to report them missing.

First responders were dispatched to the 600 block of South Belvidere Street near the Virginia War Memorial to begin a search.

Firefighters located the missing boaters a short time later.

Police say since no one is allowed in city parks after dark  firefighters escorted about a dozen people off the small island to the shore.

CBS 6 has learned officers detained at least one person.
