New interim pastor for ROC megachurch will be ‘healer’

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. -- As its former pastor and founder stands trial next week for sexually assaulting two girls, the Richmond Outreach Center announced Friday it is changing its name to Celebration Church and named its new transitional pastor.

That man, Dr. Robert "Pastor Bob" Rhoden, founded one of Richmond's first megachuches -- the West End Assembly of God -- 45 years ago.

It's a definite switch in leadership - from a young, meteoric rock star to a much-older man with a rock-like reputation.

After leading and growing WE for 22 years, Rhoden went on to become a "pastor's pastor" and repairman for ailing churches.

And the ROC has needed it since its founder, Geronimo Aguilar, was charged a year ago.

The ROC went from being one of the nation's fastest-growing churches praised by Richmond's mayor and Virginia's governor to a largely rudderless ship, leaking leadership and searching for a firm hand to right it.

Rhoden told WTVR CBS 6 that his role will be one of a "healer" and "father-image" who will help empower people involved in the church "to do what God has called them to do."

He said the ROC's many outreach programs will continue, as will its Thursday and Saturday worship/Bible-study schedule.
