CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Chesterfield County has plans to add one lane in each direction to Midlothian Turnpike between Alverser Drive and Old Buckingham Road. The Route 60 widening project kicks off in June in an effort to build a safer road and lessen traffic jams and accidents.
Business owners and drivers in the area are excited about the project because the amount of traffic that frequents the busy highway.
Larry Hancock, who works at the ABEC Electronics store in Midlothian, said his customers often find themselves in dangerous situations trying to turn on and off Midlothian Turnpike.
"Our intersection at Old Buckingham Road and Midlothian Turnpike is one of the most dangerous because of all the traffic," Hancock said. "You are merging into busy lanes and sometimes people jump through red lights because they do not want to have to wait in the traffic."
The county expects the expansion project to take about a year to complete.
