RICHMOND, Va. -- Police have released the name of the man killed after being gunned down outside a Family Dollar store on Richmond's Southside Thursday afternoon.
Richmond police said the shooting happened along the 6500 block of Midlothian Turnpike, near Carnation Street, around 3 p.m.
When officers arrived, they found 24-year-old Sylvester Nichols, of the 6300 block of Glenway Drive, lying in the store's parking lot. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
CBS 6 reporter Jon Burkett said that a business owner reported hearing heard at least three gunshots and saw a man with dreadlocks wearing a red shirt running from the scene.
"Detectives are reviewing surveillance video from nearby businesses and have interviewed several witnesses," said Richmond Police spokesman Gene Lepley said in a news release. "They do not believe this shooting was a random act."
