RICHMOND, Va. — The University of Texas has withdrawn its applications of the “HAVOC” trademark.
Texas withdrew “HORNS HAVOC” and “HOUSE OF HAVOC” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 29.
HAVOC was what former VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart dubbed as the team’s style of play when he was first introduced as VCU’s Head Coach. VCU has marketed the term aggressively since 2009 and registered it with the Virginia State Corporation Commission through 2017.
Smart was hired by Texas last month and a minor tug of war for the phrase arose. New VCU Head Coach Will Wade proclaimed at his introductory press conference that “HAVOC still lives here.” It looks like that will be the case for the foreseeable future.
