RICHMOND, Va. — Martin’s grocery will raise starting associate wages to $9 an hour, beginning June 7 this year.  The increase will occur at 197 non-union stores and the company estimated that approximately 10,000 Martin’s part-time associates will be impacted by the increase.

Martin’s, part of Ahold Companies along with Giant, employs 33,000 associates, approximately two-thirds of whom are currently paid more than $9/hour, according to the company.

Martin’s, following the lead of Walmart, McDonald’s and other national retailers, said they believe in “paying competitive wages to attract the best talent.”

“We believe that this is the right thing to do,” said Tom Lenkevich, GIANT/MARTIN’S president.
