CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. — A Ruther Glen man was killed when his pick-up truck ran off Route 30 (Dawn Boulevard) early Friday morning and hit a tree. Police identified the crash victim as 28-year-old Phillip D. Johnson, Jr.

“A 1999 Nissan pickup was traveling west on Route 30 when it ran off the road right, over corrected, ran off the road to the left, overturning several times and struck a tree,” Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick wrote in an email.

Johnson died at the scene of the crash. He was not wearing his seat belt, Vick said. The crash happened at about 1:52 a.m., near Stephen Circle.  Johnson was alone in the truck when he crashed.

“Speed is being considered a factor in the crash,” Vick said. “The crash remains under investigation.”

Anyone who knew Johnson and would like to share their memories or condolences can do so here.
