Investigators work to determine cause of massive West End apartment fire

Posted

HENRICO COUNTY, Va - Fire investigators continued to survey the damage Tuesday morning, hours after a massive fire destroyed several Hickory Creek Apartments in Henrico's West End. It was around 7 p.m. Monday that fire tore through three floors of the apartment building. Witnesses saw smoke from miles away.

"I could feel the heat on my cheeks.  It was intense," resident Emily Meredith said. She was standing only about 100 feet away from the fire. She lived in the building and watched as the structure burned and crews worked to get the fire under control.

No one was hurt, officials said, but 19 people were displaced because of the fire.  The Red Cross is assisting those fire victims.

The worst fire damage occurred on the backside of the building. Fire investigators spent Tuesday morning taking measurements and surveying the damage.  As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, no cause had been released.  Eight of the 10 apartments in the building were destroyed, according to Henrico Fire.
