CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Police identified the man killed in an accident on Route 150, near Jahnke Road in Chesterfield, Tuesday night as Mason L. Hitt, III, 56, of Henrico. Hitt, police said, was a passenger in  a 2004 Jeep Cherokee that was pulling a trailer. The trailer became disconnected as the Jeep headed north on 150 at about 6:30 p.m.

"The Jeep stopped in the left travel lane and the driver and passenger [Hitt] exited the vehicle and walked to the rear of the jeep to reconnect the trailer. There were no emergency flashers activated on the jeep," Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said via email. "A 2005 Chrysler van traveling northbound struck the Jeep that was sitting in the travel lane, knocking the driver of the jeep onto the left shoulder and pinning the passenger."

Hitt was pronounced dead at the scene, Vick said. Both the driver of the Jeep and Chrysler van were taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The crash team has not yet completed its investigation into this incident.
