Powhatan crash left woman trapped in car

POWHATAN, Va. -- A woman in Powhatan has been seriously injured in a crash.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Dorset and Dorset Ridge Road.

State Police said a 2002 Pontiac Vibe was traveling east on Dorset Ridge Road when it went to turn north onto Dorset Road and struck a 2010 Hyundai Elantra traveling south on Dorset Road.

The driver of the Hyundai was entrapped when it was struck on the passenger side by the Pontiac, and the vehicle ran off the road and struck a telephone pole.

The driver of the 2010 Hyundai, Taylor Roberts, 20, of Powhatan, Va., was transported to VCU Medical by Virginia State Police Med-Flight with serious injuries; she was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the 2002 Pontiac Vibe, Paul Smartschan, 35, of Powhatan was not injured in the crash, he was wearing a seatbelt.  He was charged with failure to yield right-of –way.
