CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - A Chesterfield school bus driver was charged with failure to yield the right of way following a morning crash on Courthouse Rd., according to police. The school bus driver, identified as 85-year-old Ira Cromer Jr., was not hurt.
When Cromer Jr. pulled out of Central Baptist Church onto Courthouse Rd. around 8 a.m. Tuesday, another car slammed into the school bus. The car became wedged under the bus. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with "minor injuries," police said.
There were no students on the bus at the time of the crash. The accident closed one lane of Courthouse Rd., near Dakins Dr., during the investigation and clean-up.
When asked if there were any rules regarding the age of county school bus drivers, the county issued the following response.
"Chesterfield County Public Schools does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, age, religion, disability or national origin in employment or in its programs and activities," Chesterfield County Public Schools Assistant Director of Community Relations Shawn Smith said via email. "As long as a driver possesses a valid DMV driver’s license, passes the appropriate DMV checks and passes an annual physical, he/she can be employed."
