VIENNA, Va. -- Police in northern Virginia say that a middle school principal has been charged with failing to report a complaint of suspected sexual abuse of a student.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Yusef Azimi was arrested on a misdemeanor charge. He’s been on leave as principal of Thoreau Middle School in Vienna.

Police said Azimi is accused of failing to inform police and child protective services about a report in October that a teacher had inappropriate contact with a student.

The teacher was later charged with carnal knowledge of a child and taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial relationship.

Azimi is mandated under the law to report such complaints to authorities.
