SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. -- State police have released the name the woman killed after her car was t-boned by a tractor-trailer Friday afternoon in Sussex County.
Virginia State Police responded to a crash on Route 40 at route 657 at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Troopers said a woman driving a Nissan Pathfinder was headed west on Route 40 when she pulled off to the right at Route 657 and made an "illegal U-turn in the middle of Route 40."
Officials said the victim did not see the tractor-trailer that was also headed westbound.
The truck attempted to stop, but the big rig T-Boned the SUV in the middle of the intersection, according to state police.
Troopers said 69-year-old Elaine Trotman, of Summerville, South Carolina, died on impact.
A passenger in the SUV was medflighted from the scene with life-threatening injuries, officials said.
The driver of the semi had non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.
The crash remains under investigation.
