RICHMOND, Va. -- COVID-19 is impacting an annual harbinger of the new school year: move-in day for students living at Virginia Commonwealth University.

This year the one-day event is being spread out due to the coronavirus.

The university sent nearly 3,900 at-home test kits to students planning to live on-campus. Those students had to administer their test, send it back and then wait for results.

Once the students are cleared, they would be allowed to scheduled a move-in date and time.

As of Thursday, a university spokesperson said the school had received roughly 3,800 of those tests back.

Nearly 2,000 of them came back negative, but three were positive. The remaining tests were still being processed, officials said.
