CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – Troopers said a tractor-trailer driver “lost control” and overturned his big rig at the ramp from the Powhite Parkway to Route 288 in Chesterfield County Friday afternoon.

VDOT officials said drivers should expect delays as the westbound right lane and right shoulder are closed.

Additionally, the off ramp from the Powhite to Route 288 south is narrowed, officials noted.

Troopers said the semi, which was hauling trash, was taking the ramp when it lost control and overturned.

“The load of trash was lost,” troopers noted.

A nurse who stopped at the scene to help before EMS crews arrived said the driver told her he swerved to miss a deer.

“He was able to climb out of the passenger side door on his own power,” she said. “No apparent injuries.”

The driver, a Maryland man who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured, according to troopers.

“Speed is being considered a factor into the cause of the crash,” troopers said.

Authorities said the driver was charged with reckless driving failure to maintain control.
