RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond School Board voted to rename three city school Tuesday night.
George Mason Elementary will be renamed Henry L. Marsh Elementary School after the city's first African American mayor, Henry L. Marsh.
The board also voted to rename E.S.H. Greene Elementary to Cardinal Elementary and the new middle school opening on Hull Street Road will be named River City Middle School.
Mason and Greene are in the process of being rebuilt, while River City Middle School will replace Elkhardt-Thompson Middle once completed.
The name change comes after the Richmond School Board adopted recommended names that were decided by public input over the last several months.
The new names will be official for the 2020-21 school year.
Henry L. Marsh Elementary School, Cardinal Elementary School, and River City Middle School will be official for the 2020-21 school year.
