CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Police have identified a recycling worker hit and killed by a car in Chesterfield County.

Matthew L. Pitchford, 57, was working along the 9800 block of River Road at about 2 p.m. on Thursday when he was struck, according to Chesterfield Police.

"A Jeep Grand Cherokee attempted to pass the recycling truck and struck Pitchford," a Chesterfield Police spokesperson wrote in an email. "Pitchford was transported to an area hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the striking vehicle remained on scene. Police continue their investigation into this crash."

Witnesses told WTVR CBS 6 Senior Reporter Wayne Covil that the recycling truck had stopped with two cars behind it when a Jeep tried to pass all three.

At that same time, the worker stepped off the truck and was hit.

"Witnesses said his body was thrown several feet," Covil said. "Those witnesses were visibly shaken by what they saw."

River Road between Graves and Church roads was closed as police investigated.
