HOPEWELL, Va. β€” Police have arrested a man in connection with a deadly shooting in a Hopewell neighborhood on Friday night.

Hopewell Police were called to Arlington Road and Raleigh Street about an "unresponsive male" just before 8:40 p.m. That is in the city's Arlington neighborhood.

"Officers arrived on the scene and located a male victim suffering from several gunshot wounds. The male victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene."

Police identified the victim as 34-year-old Travis Lamont Coleman of Hopewell.

Police said Saturday afternoon that 42-year-old Johnnie Terrell McGhee, of Hopewell, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and shooting in a public place resulting in injury.

Hopewell Police Chief Gregory Taylor said he was "thankful" for officers' "tireless efforts" and credited the community's support for the "quick apprehension of the suspect."

No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting were released.

Officers said the police department's Criminal Investigation Unit is working on the investigation, which remains ongoing.
