RICHMOND, Va. -- Thousands of people are converging on Monument Avenue and West Broad Street in Richmond for two demonstrations Saturday.

The RVA Youth Rally, which is slated to begin at 10 .m. at Maggie Walker Plaza, and the 5,000 Man March, which is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Lee monument.

The latest rallies follow more than two weeks of unrest, both in Richmond and nationwide, in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis. Four Minneapolis police officers have been charged in connection with Floyd's death. One of the officers was charged with murder after he pressed his knee on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes during an arrest.

Officials warned drivers to plan for delays as roads will be closed along Monument Avenue between Stuart Circle and Arthur Ashe Boulevard.

Police said no parking will be allowed along the route starting at 3 a.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. Sunday.

The RVA Youth Rally will shut down Broad Street between N. Foushee and Adams.

GRTC officials warned riders of possible disruptions as GRTC buses and CARE vans are rerouted onto detours, stopped in traffic and placed out of service during both the rallies.

"The ongoing demonstrations in the City of Richmond continue to block bus access to transit stops, and GRTC is working to maintain service for riders on route and on schedule while also protecting the safety of operators, riders, and pedestrians," officials with the transit company said Friday. "Smaller GRTC support vehicles continue to attempt to reach passengers missed at bus stops. CARE trips are operating normally, but CARE vehicles do not enter active protest areas."
