Police identify tractor-trailer driver killed in Short Pump crash

SHORT PUMP, Va. -- Virginia State Police has identified a tractor-trailer driver killed in a Thursday night crash on Interstate 295, at Exit 53B near Interstate 64, in Short Pump.

A trooper responded to the single-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 295 at 10:14 p.m. on July 23.

"A 2013 Freightliner Cascadia tractor trailer, carrying a load of lunch meat, was taking the exit and ran off the left side of the road striking several trees," said a state police spokesperson.

The driver, Thomas G. Howard, 64, of Judsonia, AR., was pronounced at the scene.

Police say the trailer was damaged and the load was spilled during the crash.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
